Pocket’s AI Turns Game Ideas Into Reality, but Meta Controls the Results

The rise of AI-assisted coding tools and the concept of “vibe coding” has transformed software development workflows. While these tools have been accessible to novice coders willing to invest time in setup, those with little or no coding experience often find the command-line interfaces, IDEs, and terminal-based configurations intimidating. Meta’s latest AI project aims to make vibe coding as effortless as posting on social media.

What Is Pocket?

Pocket, which launched in the US on Friday, August 21, is a mobile app that allows users to create fully functional interactive “gizmos” simply by typing prompts into a text box. There is no option to view or edit code. The app was developed after Meta acquired the team behind the now-defunct vibe-coding app Gizmo in March.

Once created, these gizmos can be shared on a TikTok-style endless scroll feed, complete with likes, comments, reposts, and other familiar social media features.

Hands-On Experience

After spending nearly a week using Pocket, I found myself drawn to the straightforward process of building functional, feature-rich game prototypes by chatting with a large language model. The ease of turning ideas into playable games is compelling.

The Catch: Meta's Walled Garden

However, the outcome of all that time and AI effort is a collection of interactive toys that are effectively trapped within Meta’s new walled garden. There is no real way to export or transform these creations into standalone projects outside the app.

While Pocket makes AI-powered game creation accessible to everyone, it also locks users into Meta’s ecosystem, raising questions about ownership and portability of user-generated content.
