Anthropic Leverages Claude to Formalize a Proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem

Anthropic PBC has announced a significant achievement in the intersection of artificial intelligence and pure mathematics. The company revealed that it used its AI model, Claude, to produce a computer-verifiable version of a proof for Fermat’s Last Theorem, a problem that stood unsolved for over three centuries. The details were shared in a blog post published by Anthropic today.

What Is a Formal Proof?

In mathematics, a proof is a series of logical arguments that establishes the truth of a hypothesis. The proof that Anthropic tackled verifies a hypothesis known as Fermat’s Last Theorem. This theorem, originally proposed by Pierre de Fermat in 1637, states that no three positive integers a, b, and c can satisfy the equation a^n + b^n = c^n for any integer value of n greater than 2. Fermat famously claimed to have a proof, but it was not found among his notes. The theorem was finally proven by Sir Andrew Wiles in 1994, using advanced mathematics that went far beyond Fermat’s original tools.

Claude’s Role in Formalization

Anthropic’s project involved taking the existing proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem and translating it into a format that can be checked by a computer. This process, known as formalization, requires breaking down every step of the proof into a language that a proof assistant software can verify. The challenge is immense because the proof relies on sophisticated concepts from algebraic geometry and number theory, and even a single logical gap would render the formalization incomplete.

According to Anthropic’s blog post, Claude was used to assist in this formalization effort. The AI model helped manage the complex, multi-layered structure of the proof, which spans hundreds of pages in its original form. By working with Claude, the team was able to produce a version of the proof that is not only human-readable but also machine-checkable, ensuring its correctness beyond any doubt.

Implications for Mathematics and AI

This achievement highlights the growing role of AI in mathematical research. Formalizing a proof as intricate as Fermat’s Last Theorem is a monumental task that traditionally requires years of expertise from mathematicians and computer scientists. Anthropic’s use of Claude demonstrates that AI can assist in such high-level intellectual work, potentially accelerating the process of verifying new mathematical discoveries.

While the blog post does not specify the exact methods or the time taken, it underscores the potential for AI to collaborate with humans on problems that demand extreme precision and logical rigor. The successful formalization of Fermat’s Last Theorem serves as a proof-of-concept for using AI in formal mathematics, which could have broader applications in software verification and other fields where correctness is critical.

Anthropic’s announcement is a notable step forward in the ongoing exploration of what AI can achieve in scientific and mathematical domains. As AI models like Claude continue to evolve, their ability to handle complex, abstract reasoning may open new avenues for research and discovery.
