Matt Clifford has stepped down as the founding chair of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), the UK government’s high-risk research funding body, just five days after taking on a full-time government-affairs position at Anthropic. Clifford announced his decision on September 7, 2026, and ARIA has confirmed that he will remain in his role on an interim basis, in agreement with the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, while the agency begins its search for a new chair.

Why Matt Clifford Is Leaving ARIA

Clifford’s departure comes shortly after he accepted a full-time role in government affairs at Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company. The timing of the two roles—overlapping by only five days—raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, prompting Clifford to step down from ARIA to focus on his new responsibilities.

In his statement, Clifford expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition, noting that he would continue to support ARIA until a successor is appointed. ARIA, which was established to fund ambitious, high-risk research projects that traditional funding bodies often overlook, will now need to find a new leader to guide its mission.

Interim Arrangement and Search for a New Chair

ARIA confirmed that Clifford will stay on as interim chair, working with the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade to manage the leadership transition. The agency has not yet provided a timeline for appointing a permanent replacement, but the search process is expected to begin immediately.

Clifford’s exit marks a significant change for ARIA, which he helped establish as a key part of the UK’s strategy to support pioneering research. His background in technology and innovation had been seen as an asset to the agency, and his departure leaves a gap that will need to be filled by someone with similar expertise.

What This Means for ARIA's Future

While Clifford’s move to Anthropic signals a shift in his career focus, ARIA’s ongoing projects and funding commitments are expected to continue without disruption. The agency’s leadership will work to ensure that its research portfolio remains on track during the transition period.

Observers will be watching to see who takes over the chair role, as ARIA’s work in supporting high-risk, high-reward research is considered vital to the UK’s innovation ecosystem. Clifford’s interim tenure will provide some stability, but the search for a new chair will be closely followed by the research community.
